So what’s your answer when your kids say “I’m bored. There’s nothing to do.”?
My dad’s answer was always “Go stand on your head and eat a bug”. Gross, like that sounds appealing.
My mom’s answer was “there’s lots of clothes to fold. Have a folding party.” Yeah right. Who in the world thinks folding laundry is a party!
I don’t have much of an answer for my kids. At least not a standard answer. In the summer I’ve told them to “go get in the pool, we didn’t buy it for nothing”. Jorge usually says “read a book”. That answer quickly alleviates any boredom - meaning they find something else to do so as not to read a book.
Jeremiah is by far the easiest to please in this regard. He’s willing to do pretty much anything. Jorge will also find something to do -and contrary to popular belief those of us who actually live with him know that he is not ALWAYS playing video games. There’s a reason he collects transformers. And he could spend hours on those drums. Cathy however is a complete different story. What do preteens and teenage girls actually do? They don’t really play with toys anymore. She’s not a big reading fan. She loves movies though. I’ll have to do more research on girls her age - what do they do for fun?
I think I should come up with a list of great things to do when you’re bored. Maybe a couple of lists. I’m sure the list will get old after a while, but if I change the lists every so often . . . it just might work. They have to be semi extravagant. More than just read a book, color, etc. They have to be things that actually intrigue them. Hmm. More research definitely.
Help me out blog world. What are your kids alternatives to boredom??
